We focus on multilevel modelling for continuous and binary responses (dependent or outcome variables) when the data are clustered (nested or hierarchical). These models can be viewed as an extension of conventional linear and logistic regression models to account for and learn from the clustering in the data. Such models are appropriate when\, for example\, analysing exam scores of students nested within schools\, or health outcomes of patients nested within hospitals. Special interest lies in disentangling social processes operating at different levels of analysis by decomposing the within- from the between-cluster effects of covariates (explanatory or predictor variables). Longitudinal data are also clustered\, with repeated measurements on individuals or multiple panel waves per survey respondent. Throughout the course we emphasize how to interpret multilevel models and the types of research question they can be used to explore.\n\nTestimonials\n\n“The course was really excellent – clearly structured and in a logical order. The instructors alternate the lecturing. The lectures are software independent. Each lecture is immediately followed by a software practical giving participants the chance to replicate the presented analyses and to consolidate their knowledge. The practicals are offered in participants’ choice of MLwiN\, R\, or Stata and are self-directed: participants complete the practicals at their own pace. At the end of each practical session the instructors demo the different software. In both the lectures and practicals\, participants have opportunities to interact with the instructors.\n\nZoom\nThe course will be delivered online via the freely accessible Zoom platform. The lectures will be delivered live. Participants can ask questions via Zoom’s text-based chat facility and these will be monitored and answered by the instructor not presenting or relayed to the instructor presenting to answer live.\n\nParticipants are encouraged to join the lectures live\, but recordings of the lectures will be made available shortly afterwards for twelve weeks following the course if participants are unable to attend at the scheduled time. After twelve weeks\, video access will end and will not be extended.\n\nDuring the practicals\, participants can also speak with the instructors. Participants can use these opportunities to ask specific questions about the course material or about multilevel modelling related to their own research. Each software package will be demonstrated in a different breakout room.\n\nMaterials\nParticipants will be emailed in advance with comprehensive PDF copies of the lecture slides together with point-and-click instructions and datasets for MLwiN\, and annotated syntax files and datasets for R and Stata. During the practicals\, participants are encouraged to view the lecture slides on a second screen (or tablet etc.)\, else print copies out to have in front of them. Those choosing to use MLwiN may also want to view the point-and-click instructions on a second screen\, else print them out.\n\nSoftware\nFor those choosing to use MLwiN\, we will provide instructions as to how to download and install the free teaching version of this software. For those wishing to use R or Stata we assume you are already users of these software so have them installed.\n\nPre-requisites\nWe assume no prior knowledge of multilevel modelling. However\, participants should be familiar with estimating and interpreting linear regression models\, including the writing and interpretation of model equations\, hypothesis testing and model selection\, and the use and interpretation of dummy variables and interaction terms.\n\nWe will email in advance a pre-recorded lecture\, to be completed at the participant’s leisure\, which provides a review of linear regression accompanied with software instructions and datasets to replicate the analyses in MLwiN\, R\, and Stata.\n\nFor those choosing to use MLwiN\, we assume no prior knowledge of using this software and so we provide step-by-step instructions to allow you to replicate all presented analyses in MLwiN. SUMMARY:Channel or Challenge Perfectionism?
DESCRIPTION:In this participative\, graphically-facilitated workshop\, we will look at perfectionism that channels continuous improvement and optimistic approaches. We’ll share ways you can identify realistic standards and goals\, reframe mistakes as learning\, how to approach planning and preparation\, and how to counter risk-aversion and procrastination. Perfection can impact productivity. So in terms of sought-after transferable skills such as time management\, we’ll look at how to identify ‘good enough’\, redirecting time and energy to other priorities. Perfectionism is a common trait in academia. In this workshop we’ll consider where this can be best directed as it does not need to be applied across all aspects of your work. We’ll look at different strategies to channel improvement in areas that will have a positive effect on your research and research experience – such as how to manage expectations\, setting realistic goals\, dealing with feedback\, developing a more flexible approach\, and unlocking your creativity – helping open up new opportunities. Sabina will illustrate concepts\, share her own experiences and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations and respond to your particular questions and objectives.

For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will:\n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva;\n• identify key practical steps to take before submission;\n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. SUMMARY:Logical Foundations of Critical Thinking
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of critical thinking is the ability to reason well. When we reason\, our aim is to identify beliefs or actions which are supported by current mental states of ours. This course will consider different ways in which beliefs can be supported by other beliefs as well as different ways in which actions can be supported by beliefs and other mental states. \nWe will look at two types of reasoning about what to believe: deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning. In good deductive reasoning\, the beliefs functioning as premises provide total support for the conclusion; the truth of the premises guarantees the truth of the conclusion. In contrast\, in good inductive reasoning\, the premises only provide a high degree of support for the conclusion; the conclusion could be false even if the premises are true. We will discuss different conceptions of good deductive and inductive inferences. \nIn the area of reasoning about what to do\, we will consider means-end reasoning\, decision theory and moral reasoning. DESCRIPTION:This media and communications workshop is designed to ensure that the next time you address a rolling camera\, an audience or an interview panel\, you’re fully equipped to get your message across. This interactive session covers a range of tips\, techniques and broadcast skills including: developing and boosting your messages\, tackling nervousness\, communicating academic research to a wider audience\, building confidence and presence and dealing with hostile or curveball questions. \nWe’ll break down some interview examples and look at the broadcast media environment\, exploring different settings and how prepare for each one. We will run a recorded mock interview so you have a chance to put some of those skills into practice. DESCRIPTION:As an academic you are expected to fulfil a number of different roles. You are a researcher\, educator\, you have administrative tasks and are expected to show leadership and be an effective manager. This often includes defining your own goals and being expected to reinvent yourself constantly\, publish or perish\, inspire and engage students and the wider public\, and to work at the fringes of research and go beyond. On top of that you are bombarded by university meetings\, requests to attend to administrative tasks and email overload! This is exacerbated by being a parent\, where we have much less time and energy often resulting in feeling we are a bad parent as well a bad researcher. \nAll of this can pile the pressure on and can feel overwhelming. Unfortunately\, our typical approach to dealing with this is to react to the loudest and latest requests\, effectively only responding to what other people want from us rather than being able to prioritise the most important tasks. As a result\, we work long hours\, even during weekends\, while being at the same time frustrated not achieving our goals. \nThis session will help you break this vicious circle. You will be introduced to a wide range of modern productivity tools and techniques\, alongside numerous examples from real academic work\, to help you deal with these challenges. You will be able to raise your productivity\, set and achieve your goals\, reduce your stress\, boost your creativity\, increase you thinking time\, beat procrastination\, and keep focused and calm during stressful times – All with the effect of being more in control\, balanced and\, eventually\, happier and more fulfilled. \nThe workshop will take place in-person at the SWDTP Offices in 1 Priory Road\, Bristol\, BS8 1TX.\nThe workshop has 2 parts. DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore;\n❏ Top tips for non-academic job applications\, CV writing and interviews\n❏ Pitching your PhD for non-academic jobs – formal and informal methods\n❏ Key skills\, experience\, and attributes needed in different sectors\n❏ Hacking real job applications\n❏ Skills and experience you want to develop during your PhD \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have;\n❏ A better understanding of the types of jobs available now in different sectors and how to find them\n❏ Heard from professionals about how their PhDs informed their non-academic careers\n❏ Gained practical advice from sector experts on shaping your CV and interviewing\n❏ Practised pitching your PhD skills for non-academic jobs\n❏ Identified your priorities for professional development \nThis workshop will take place on Zoom and be facilitated by Hannah Bird & Dr Ceri Gorton from Bird & Gorton. \n  \nJeanette Bain-Burnett\nExecutive Director for Policy and Integrity\, Sport England  \nJeanette Bain-Burnett is Executive Director for Policy and Integrity at Sport England. She’s a passionate advocate for Equity\, Inclusion and Community Wellbeing. Jeanette’s 20-year leadership career spans dance theatre\, community arts\, cultural strategy\, regional government and social policy. Former roles include Director of Participation at the Trussell Trust and Assistant Director\, Communities and Social Policy at the Greater London Authority. Based in Bristol\, Jeanette is chair of ACTA Community Theatre\, Governor at St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School\, and leads Dream Camp\, a girls’ empowerment charity \n  \nDr Alice Bell \nHead of Climate & Health Policy\, Wellcome Trust \n  \nDr Alice Bell is Head of Climate and Health Policy at the Wellcome Trust. She manages a team of policy professionals working across climate change\, infectious disease\, mental health and discovery research issues\, including a programme to secure and deliver the first health day at a UN climate conference. Prior to joining Wellcome in July 2022\, Alice co-ran the climate action charity Possible\, working on everything from clean home heating to solar powered railways\, fixing factories and wind powered ice cream. She has also worked as an academic\, writer and in the museum sector. She is the author of Can We Save the Planet? (Thames and Hudson\, 2020) and Our Biggest Experiment: a history of the climate crisis (Bloomsbury\, 2021)\, which was shortlisted for the 2022 Wainwright Prize for writing on global conservation. \n  \nDr Poshendra Satyal \nSenior Policy Manager\, Birdlife International \nWith a background in the natural and social sciences\, Poshendra has several years of experience in interdisciplinary research\, teaching\, consultancy and project management in the environment and development sector. He currently holds the position of Senior Policy Manager at BirdLife International in Cambridge. As part of his role\, he coordinates BirdLife’s Global Policy Department’s work to enhance the BirdLife Partnership’s policy and advocacy capacity and support the delivery of conservation policy processes. Additionally\, he provides expert advice and guidance to the Partnership\, with a specific focus on global policies related to human development\, justice\, and rights. Poshendra also represents BirdLife in the Conservation Initiative on Human Rights (CIHR). \nBeyond his role at BirdLife\, Poshendra serves as a Trustee/Director of the Royal Geographical Society’s Mount Everest Foundation\, and as an Affiliate Senior Research Fellow at the Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (Nepal). \nPoshendra obtained his PhD from the Geography Department of The Open University\, UK (2005-2009)\, and an MPhil in Environment and Development from the University of Cambridge\, UK (2001-2002). Prior to coming to the UK\, he completed a BSc (Honours) in Agriculture from Haryana Agricultural University\, India (1996-2000) and a BSc from Tribhuvan University\, Nepal (1994-1996).

SUMMARY:Channel or Challenge Perfectionism?
DESCRIPTION:In this participative\, graphically-facilitated workshop\, we will look at perfectionism that channels continuous improvement and optimistic approaches. We’ll share ways you can identify realistic standards and goals\, reframe mistakes as learning\, how to approach planning and preparation\, and how to counter risk-aversion and procrastination. Perfection can impact productivity. So in terms of sought-after transferable skills such as time management\, we’ll look at how to identify ‘good enough’\, redirecting time and energy to other priorities. Perfectionism is a common trait in academia. In this workshop we’ll consider where this can be best directed as it does not need to be applied across all aspects of your work. We’ll look at different strategies to channel improvement in areas that will have a positive effect on your research and research experience – such as how to manage expectations\, setting realistic goals\, dealing with feedback\, developing a more flexible approach\, and unlocking your creativity – helping open up new opportunities. Sabina will illustrate concepts\, share her own experiences and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations and respond to your particular questions and objectives.

SUMMARY:Public Policy Analysis Methods
DESCRIPTION:What:\nThis hybrid condensed workshop will help participants to quickly grasp public policy analysis methods that are commonly used and to become familiar with how to write policy analysis findings. You will gain an overview of the methods and also have an opportunity to analyse sample data and discuss your thinking on the methods for your own research. \nThe facilitator: Dr Tae-Hee Choi\nDr Tae-Hee Choi has completed Research Grants Council Hong Kong funded research investigating the formation\, implementation and impact of a new education privatisation policy\, and published articles adopting various policy research methods journals including Compare and Journal of Education Policy. She is a co-convenor of the Policy Studies and Politics of Education network of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) and an editor of the Policy Research Methods section for the Handbook of Education Policy to be published by Bloomsbury. \nWho:\nThis training is suitable for students across the Doctoral Training Partnership network including those moving from masters to doctoral studies or in the early stages of their doctorates. Where space is available it will be opened to other PGRs. \nThe detail:\nThis workshop combines lecture and hands-on analysis. It will start with conceptualising policy and an overview of policy research types. Then policy analysis methods that are commonly used for each type of policy research as well as recently (re)emerging methods will be introduced. You will then analyse sample data by adopting diverse methods to capture different phases of the policy process\, e.g.\, discursive institutionalist analysis (policy agenda setting)\, and genre chain analysis (policy formulation). You will then share your own research projects and explore the methods that will best suit your purposes.
