SUMMARY:Introducing Critical Interpretive Synthesis: a systematic\, inclusive and generative approach to reviewing the literature
DESCRIPTION:This session introduces critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) as a systematic approach to collating\, reviewing and synthesising a diverse body of research evidence. CIS aims to produce fresh insights on an issue of concern\, drawing on techniques that are common in qualitative inquiry\, such as the ongoing refinement of research questions and an iterative process of data collection and analysis. I will share my own experiences of using CIS in solo and collaborative projects in the field of education (Mitchell\, 2025). In this interactive session we will consider CIS in relation to other approaches to systematic review\, comparing their logics and processes. We will consider the affordances and challenges of using CIS in a doctoral research project\, and strategies for incorporating CIS within your own work. \nThis session is hosted by Dr Rafael Mitchell\, Senior Lecturer in Comparative and International Education\, and co-director of the Centre for Comparative and International Research in Education (CIRE) at the University of Bristol. \nReference: Mitchell\, R. (2025). Using critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) for theoretical development: Mobilising African education research. In Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1. SUMMARY:Making your literature review count
DESCRIPTION:The literature review is a key part of your doctoral thesis. It takes time to develop and builds an original argument. So\, why not make it available to others by turning it into a peer-reviewed publication? In this session of our Conducting Literature Reviews webinar series\, two early career researchers (ECRs) will talk about how they used their literature reviews in publications and gain recognition in their field. \nDr Nasrul Ismail is Senior Lecturer in Criminology in the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. He is a co-editor of Justice\, Power and Resistance (Bristol University Press) and also serves on the International Advisory Board for the International Journal of Prison Health. Nasrul also happens to be an SWDTP alumnus.\nDr Freya Wise is an SWDTP-awarded ESRC Research Fellow at UWE Bristol in the Centre for Advanced Built Environment Research (CABER) and a Visiting Fellow at The Open University. \nRegistration: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/swdtp/1651287

SUMMARY:Viva Survivor
DESCRIPTION:The viva is almost the end of the PhD. A lot of work leads to this point\, but often anxiety can mix with the sense of achievement at completing the thesis. For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \n  \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will: \n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva; \n• identify key practical steps to take before submission; \n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \n  \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. Viva Survivor will be delivered live by Dr Nathan Ryder over Zoom. Registration is limited.

SUMMARY:How to Build and Measure Impact
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will help you understand the principles of different kinds of impact (academic\, societal and economic)\, how to identify the intended impacts of research and potential beneficiaries\, how to plan activities that will help achieve those intended impacts and how to measure progress towards these impacts. We will work through a ‘glucard TM building blocks’ plan for impact using a case study. You will be able to refine\, adapt and review the tool for use for your current research or as you plan future projects\, whether these are within or outwith an academic setting. The workshop will help free your creative thinking by getting ideas down on paper\, increase awareness about how to make impact integral to your work in practical and tangible ways\, and grow your capabilities and confidence to take actions forward. It will also help you show you that\, when planned alongside a PhD or project\, evaluation also enables you to continually improve your research strategy\, adapt your approach to enable greater impacts\, and help develop sought-after transferable skills. Sabina will graphically illustrate concepts and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations. The workshop is supported by further guides and references and Sabina is open to participant questions after the workshop.

SUMMARY:Excellence at Interview- Grants and Jobs Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:An interview is a precious opportunity to make a positive\, memorable impression and advance a researcher’s career. Thorough preparation is vital\, and that means working on style as well as content. The way candidates conduct themselves\, present ideas and respond to questions has a powerful influence on the way they are perceived. Even an academic front-runner can come unstuck if he or she lacks ‘presence’ and has difficulty interacting with others. \n  \nThe topics addressed include: \n• Principles of effective interviews \n• Managing nerves and appearing confident \n• Achieving physical and vocal presence \n• Engaging the interview panel \n• Responding convincingly to questions. \n  \nCourse participants learn how to do themselves justice under interview conditions. They develop a clearer\, more authoritative interview style that allows the strength of their ideas to shine through. After the course\, you’ll be able to get access to a course summary\, follow-up material and the VOX Academy – an online repository of written guidance\, lively videos and other resources to help you extend your learning and take your communication skills to the next level.

SUMMARY:Unlock the Power of Corpus-Based Techniques for systematic literature reviews
DESCRIPTION:Advances in computer technology made it possible to create and use large language databases often referred to as corpora in language studies. A recent development in the field is to apply corpus-based approaches to a wide range of areas beyond linguistic analysis (Pérez-Paredes\, 2021; Seale & Charteris-Black\, 2010). This interactive webinar will showcase how both quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis techniques—such as keyword analysis\, analysis of collocation (frequently co-occurring words)\, keywords in context\, and multi-word items—can be effectively utilized to identify and examine key themes for systematic literature reviews. Mastering corpus-based techniques is useful for researchers and PhD students as it allows for a more systematic and comprehensive analysis of existing literature. These skills enable participants to uncover patterns and themes that might be missed through traditional methods\, thereby enhancing the depth and rigour of research. \nThis session will be presented by Dr Reka Jablonkai\, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the Department of Education and Research Group Convenor for the Language in and for Education Research Group at The University of Bath. \nReserve a space on our Ticket Tailor page: https://buytickets.at/swdtp/1620092

SUMMARY:Queer(ing) Migration film screening and director Q&A - MMB PGR Group
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the date for the second MMB PGR discussion group taking place on Thursday 27th February from 3:00-5:00pm (Arts Complex LT3). \nContinuing our thread of critical approaches to migration studies\, we will be paying attention to perspectives on queer(ing) migration\, particularly to challenge understandings of queer liberation through migration. Which bodies are afforded opportunities to migrate? How do borders act as violent regulators of Western understandings of sex\, genders\, and sexualities? How might queer perspectives challenge the assumption that queer refugees are ‘liberated’ in and through their asylum claims? \nTo help us with these questions\, we are excited to be screening the film Queer Exile\, directed by writer and activist Ahmed Awadalla. He will join us virtually to take part in a Q&A after the screening. The details of the film are below: \nAfter fleeing Egypt post-2011 revolution\, an activist seeks freedom in Berlin but finds himself in a refugee camp surrounded by far-right protests. As he navigates the hostility and nostalgia for his past\, he reflects on exile\, queerness\, and the meaning of “home” while forming new friendships. \nDrinks and popcorn will be provided to go along with the film screening. Most importantly\, this is an interdisciplinary space and we value as much input from as many perspectives as possible! \nPlease register to attend as this will help us plan catering and let us know if you have any dietary requirements. For further information\, please get in touch. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:How do you search for articles in a systematic way?
DESCRIPTION:In this 60-minute webinar\, we will explore the difference between a “traditional” literature review and one that draws on systematic methodologies. We will examine what is meant by a “comprehensive” search and how to build a robust search strategy\, delve into searching in various databases\, and discuss how to manage the screening of our results. Systematic literature reviews can be used in your doctoral dissertation. They are often commissioned by organisations that need background information to inform a budget decision\, policy advocacy or to bid for funding\, so it is a useful skill for anyone planning a career as a social science researcher. \nThis webinar will be delivered by Rosey Crow who is Subject librarian for the School of Education and the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. Active participation is not expected. You are\, of course\, welcome to raise questions during the session. Please note this session will be recorded. \nRegister here on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-do-you-search-for-articles-in-a-systematic-way-tickets-1220789597549?aff=oddtdtcreator

\nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will:\n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva;\n• identify key practical steps to take before submission;\n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. Viva Survivor will be delivered live by Dr Nathan Ryder over Zoom. Registration is limited to 30 places.

SUMMARY:We Encourage Each Other to (Re)fuse: A Writing Workshop on Queer and Decolonial Practices for Liberating Participatory Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:This interactive half-day workshop is for politically engaged researchers and writers who seek to address the root causes of socio-ecological injustice\, and who work with/in modern/colonial knowledge institutions and systems. Please join if you have an inkling that this might be you!\n\nDuring our time together\, we’ll move through a flow of ‘thinking-feeling’ writing exercises and creative conversations. These will help us explore different ways of relating with institutional conditionings\, queer conditions that limit our approaches to inquiry\, and transmute binary ways of being into more relational ones. The idea is to make space to refuse habits that harm and re-fuse with the wider field of life-bearing realities.\n\nThis workshop is co-organized by ARCIO and SPICE in collaboration with Dr. Sarah Amsler\, who will facilitate online.\n\n\nThe writing workshop open to ARCIO and SPICE members (including doctoral researchers)\, and other members of the University of Bristol and extended networks who are interested in de-institutionalizing and queering knowledge practices and sensibilities.\n\nThis event will be most beneficial for people who are working on writing differently\, and/or who draw on (or wish to increasingly draw on) feminist\, participative\, queer\, and/or decolonial approaches in their work\, and as spaces are limited\, priority will be given to them.

SUMMARY:Working with Marginalised Communities Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:A growing number of PhD students and Early Career Researchers have shown interest in pursuing research with and for communities who have traditionally been viewed from an abstract distance if\, indeed\, they have been viewed at all. The scope of these projects is wide and includes researchers working with women in domestic violence refuges\, teenagers in socio-economically deprived areas of London and Afghani refugee communities caught in the limbo of the Aegean islands. \nWhat these projects all have in common is that they bring academic scholars into contact with individuals and communities that are likely to have experienced trauma as well as disempowering if not explicitly violent interactions with institutional and state authorities. High levels of professional and personal sensitivity and ethics are essential if the researcher is to avoid replicating the participants’ experiences of marginalisation and creating an abstract rather than rich\, nuanced picture of their live s and experiences. This is a webinar series delivered by Fred Ehresmann\, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the University of the West of England and Dr Jade Lee\, director of Aurora Learning and former UK Programme Lead of School Bus Project\, an NGO that supported educational programmes for young refugees in Europe. \nBy the end of the webinars\, participants will:\n• Have an introductory understanding of the psychological and physiological impact of chronic trauma on the individual.\n• Have an understanding of ‘Trauma Informed Care’ and why it is an integral part of working respectfully and ethically with traumatized\npopulations.\n• Have considered the importance of informed consent and what this looks like practically in unstable environments.\n• Have practical strategies for conducting research interviews in a sensitive\, ethical\, and trauma-informed manner.\n• Have explored their own position as researchers and individuals within a broader social context and the expectations and\npreconceptions they bring to the interaction.\n• Considered the importance of safeguarding their own mental wellbeing in the research context and practical ways of doing so \n  \nPlease note: you will need to sign up to each day individually through Eventbrite\, each day will be different to the last so sign up to all of them for the full course!

SUMMARY:SWDTP Seminar Series: The Many Faces of Activist Research
DESCRIPTION:This seminar series explores theoretical\, methodological\, and practical tools for conducting what can be broadly defined as “activist research”. This is a form of research that challenges the traditional separation between theory/action\, academy/society and is committed to producing knowledge grounded in and generative of social and material changes in particular places. There are many ways in which the intersection between these domains is understood and practiced: from “scholar-activism” and “militant research”\, to “community experiments” and “participatory-action-research” and more. Through a reflective and inquisitive approach toward the concepts of research and activism\, this series seeks to unfold the plurality of ways in which we can understand and engage in research-activism.\nAcross a series of four events\, we hope to foster critical discussions and nurture a supportive and inclusive environment where collaborative networks can be forged. We will engage with the work of both established and early career researchers\, as well as representatives from outside of the university\, to consider the diverse ways in which research and activism intersect and the opportunities\, challenges\, possibilities and impossibilities it raises. \nEach Zoom webinar will feature short presentations from three speakers and will have a chance for audience questions and answers. Please join us for what we hope to be a set of stimulating and generative discussions. \nDates: \nApril 19th 2-4pm Introduction to activist research\, key questions and themes\n\nApril 26th 2-4pm Co-designing research and working with collectives\nMay 3rd 2-4pm Methods\, access and questions of power\n\nMay 10th 2-4pm Regenerative research cultures\n\nFor more details and to see who will be speaking at each session\, please check the Eventbrite page
