DESCRIPTION:The 2024 intake of SWDTP students is the first cohort to follow the most recently revised ESRC training guidelines. With contribution from academic and professional services colleagues across our partner institutions\, we have now introduced new processes and components that students must engage with. DESCRIPTION:Researchers at Bournemouth University would like to invite our SWDTP partners to the first Sexual Violence Research Group conference. Started in 2022\, the SVRG is an inter-faculty network which aims to conduct\, share\, and promote research into the causes and context\, and prevention of\, sexual violence in a range of different settings. DESCRIPTION:The viva is almost the end of the PhD. A lot of work leads to this point\, but often anxiety can mix with the sense of achievement at completing the thesis. For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will:\n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva;\n• identify key practical steps to take before submission;\n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. SUMMARY:Channel or Challenge Perfectionism?
DESCRIPTION:In this participative\, graphically-facilitated workshop\, we will look at perfectionism that channels continuous improvement and optimistic approaches. We’ll share ways you can identify realistic standards and goals\, reframe mistakes as learning\, how to approach planning and preparation\, and how to counter risk-aversion and procrastination. Perfection can impact productivity. So in terms of sought-after transferable skills such as time management\, we’ll look at how to identify ‘good enough’\, redirecting time and energy to other priorities. Perfectionism is a common trait in academia. In this workshop we’ll consider where this can be best directed as it does not need to be applied across all aspects of your work. We’ll look at different strategies to channel improvement in areas that will have a positive effect on your research and research experience – such as how to manage expectations\, setting realistic goals\, dealing with feedback\, developing a more flexible approach\, and unlocking your creativity – helping open up new opportunities. Sabina will illustrate concepts\, share her own experiences and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations and respond to your particular questions and objectives.

SUMMARY:Public Policy Analysis Methods
DESCRIPTION:What:\nThis hybrid condensed workshop will help participants to quickly grasp public policy analysis methods that are commonly used and to become familiar with how to write policy analysis findings. You will gain an overview of the methods and also have an opportunity to analyse sample data and discuss your thinking on the methods for your own research. \nThe facilitator: Dr Tae-Hee Choi\nDr Tae-Hee Choi has completed Research Grants Council Hong Kong funded research investigating the formation\, implementation and impact of a new education privatisation policy\, and published articles adopting various policy research methods journals including Compare and Journal of Education Policy. She is a co-convenor of the Policy Studies and Politics of Education network of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) and an editor of the Policy Research Methods section for the Handbook of Education Policy to be published by Bloomsbury. \nWho:\nThis training is suitable for students across the Doctoral Training Partnership network including those moving from masters to doctoral studies or in the early stages of their doctorates. Where space is available it will be opened to other PGRs. \nThe detail:\nThis workshop combines lecture and hands-on analysis. It will start with conceptualising policy and an overview of policy research types. Then policy analysis methods that are commonly used for each type of policy research as well as recently (re)emerging methods will be introduced. You will then analyse sample data by adopting diverse methods to capture different phases of the policy process\, e.g.\, discursive institutionalist analysis (policy agenda setting)\, and genre chain analysis (policy formulation). You will then share your own research projects and explore the methods that will best suit your purposes.

SUMMARY:Researcher Wellbeing Group - with guest Dr Donna Poade
DESCRIPTION:The Researcher Wellbeing Group will be hosting its final guest talk of the academic year (we’ll be taking a break over August and coming back in September). This session will be a guest talk by Dr Donna Poade from Falmouth University\, Cornwall. Donna is a senior lecturer in experience design and has a special academic expertise in dark tourism\, the phenomenon of travel to visitor sites associated with death and suffering alongside a keen interest in research methods and methodology\, specifically when researching sensitive issues as a qualitative researcher. Donna is passionate about wellbeing and works as a community researcher evaluating mental health initiatives with regular published articles and as is a trainee psychotherapist. \n\nIn her talk\, Donna will share her experiences and reflections associated with her research journey in dark tourism research as a qualitative researcher. She will highlight the opportunities and challenges of ‘emotional methodologies’ of qualitative research on sensitive issues and the impact her research had on her both personally and professionally. Her contribution aims to raise awareness of the importance of wellbeing for all people connected to a research process including researchers and supervisory and support teams alongside the need to open the discussion on methodological training and resources to support researchers.

SUMMARY:The Decolonial Researcher
DESCRIPTION:This course will offer an in-depth exploration of decolonising academia by asking: What are the possibilities when it comes to decolonial research? \n\nThis one-day course will be split into four sections: \n\nExamining the decolonial critique of academia. This will involve exploring some of the main themes found within decolonial scholarship and activism with a specific focus on the decolonial critique of social science research. \nExploring some of the key predecessors of decolonial research which have had a significant impact on current thinking about decolonial research. More specifically\, consideration will be given to the relationship between feminist research\, Indigenous research\, and decolonial research. \nConsidering various strategies which have been suggested to decolonise research. This will involve discussing some of the practical strategies that may be used when trying to produce decolonial research. \nOffering a critique of decolonial research. This will involve recognising the limitations of decolonial research which make it an imperfect approach to conducting research. \n\nThe course will be delivered in an interactive workshop format which will involve a mixture of lecture-style teaching\, interactive large-group discussions\, and small-group conversations. \n\nThis course is designed for doctoral researchers within social science disciplines however researchers from all disciplines\, expertise\, and backgrounds are welcome to attend. \n\nBy the end of the course participants will: \n\nBe well-versed in the decolonial critique of academia\, particularly in relation to social science research. \nBe able to identify the core principles and strategies which constitute decolonial research. \nBe prepared to offer a lucid critique of decolonial research. \n\nThe course will take place at the University of Manchester between 10am-5pm \n\nPlease note\, lunch will not be provided. \n\nThe fee per teaching day is £35 per day for students / £75 per day for staff working for academic institutions\, Research Councils and other recognised research institutions\, registered charity organisations and the public sector / £250 per day for all other participants. \n  \nBOOK HERE

DESCRIPTION:This participative online workshop will help you understand what skills and behaviours are valued by different sectors\, explore ways to identify and communicate your considerable existing transferable skills and pinpoint strategies to further develop desirable skills. Your facilitator\, Dr Sabina Strachan is an example of the transferability of the skills you will have cultivated during your PhD. She will share her ‘squiggly career’ path as an example with you. This workshop will spotlight different approaches that align with the different goals and strengths we each have and highlight the importance of workplace culture and workplace environment in supporting goals and nurturing strengths. Using glucard™ tools you will practise ways to cultivate or demonstrate two sought-after skills and develop specific actions to take forward.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-day\, PGR-focused seminar on creative methodologies to explore the power of creative & arts-based approaches in your research. You will have the opportunity to join in interactive workshops hearing from a range of researchers from different disciplines who have used creative approaches in their research. Drawing from the principles of doing ‘slow research’\, participants will be encouraged to reflexively engage – and share experiences through creative engagement. Be prepared to participate as you will have an opportunity throughout the day to share\, think\, ask questions and make\, as together we consider the challenges\, benefits and impact of creative methodologies from an interdisciplinary lens. Please bring your own creative tools (markers\, coloured pencils\, crayons\, pens etc) and let’s flourish! \nWe have a fantastic set of researchers who will be facilitating the sessions. DESCRIPTION:This media and communications workshop is designed to ensure that the next time you address a rolling camera\, an audience or an interview panel\, you’re fully equipped to get your message across. This interactive session covers a range of tips\, techniques and broadcast skills including: developing and boosting your messages\, tackling nervousness\, communicating academic research to a wider audience\, building confidence and presence and dealing with hostile or curveball questions. \nWe’ll break down some interview examples and look at the broadcast media environment\, exploring different settings and how prepare for each one. We will run a recorded mock interview so you have a chance to put some of those skills into practice. Whether addressing a live audience or TV show\, a podcast\, panel or video blog\, by the end of the session\, you will have the confidence and skills to present your academic expertise. \nAn award-winning journalist\, author and broadcaster\, Rachel Shabi works with a variety of clients including universities\, international NGOs\, think tanks and other organisations to develop and enhance communications skills.
