DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-day\, PGR-focused seminar on creative methodologies to explore the power of creative & arts-based approaches in your research. You will have the opportunity to join in interactive workshops hearing from a range of researchers from different disciplines who have used creative approaches in their research. Drawing from the principles of doing ‘slow research’\, participants will be encouraged to reflexively engage – and share experiences through creative engagement. Be prepared to participate as you will have an opportunity throughout the day to share\, think\, ask questions and make\, as together we consider the challenges\, benefits and impact of creative methodologies from an interdisciplinary lens. Please bring your own creative tools (markers\, coloured pencils\, crayons\, pens etc) and let’s flourish! \nWe have a fantastic set of researchers who will be facilitating the sessions. DESCRIPTION:This media and communications workshop is designed to ensure that the next time you address a rolling camera\, an audience or an interview panel\, you’re fully equipped to get your message across. This interactive session covers a range of tips\, techniques and broadcast skills including: developing and boosting your messages\, tackling nervousness\, communicating academic research to a wider audience\, building confidence and presence and dealing with hostile or curveball questions. \nWe’ll break down some interview examples and look at the broadcast media environment\, exploring different settings and how prepare for each one. We will run a recorded mock interview so you have a chance to put some of those skills into practice. Whether addressing a live audience or TV show\, a podcast\, panel or video blog\, by the end of the session\, you will have the confidence and skills to present your academic expertise. \nAn award-winning journalist\, author and broadcaster\, Rachel Shabi works with a variety of clients including universities\, international NGOs\, think tanks and other organisations to develop and enhance communications skills.

DESCRIPTION:A growing number of PhD students and Early Career Researchers have shown interest in pursuing research with and for communities who have traditionally been viewed from an abstract distance if\, indeed\, they have been viewed at all. The scope of these projects is wide and includes researchers working with women in domestic violence refuges\, teenagers in socio-economically deprived areas of London and Afghani refugee communities caught in the limbo of the Aegean islands. \nWhat these projects all have in common is that they bring academic scholars into contact with individuals and communities that are likely to have experienced trauma as well as disempowering if not explicitly violent interactions with institutional and state authorities. High levels of professional and personal sensitivity and ethics are essential if the researcher is to avoid replicating the participants’ experiences of marginalisation and creating an abstract rather than rich\, nuanced picture of their live s and experiences. This is a webinar series delivered by Fred Ehresmann\, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the University of the West of England and Dr Jade Lee\, director of Aurora Learning and former UK Programme Lead of School Bus Project\, an NGO that supported educational programmes for young refugees in Europe. \nBy the end of the webinars\, participants will:\n• Have an introductory understanding of the psychological and physiological impact of chronic trauma on the individual.\n• Have an understanding of ‘Trauma Informed Care’ and why it is an integral part of working respectfully and ethically with traumatized\npopulations.\n• Have considered the importance of informed consent and what this looks like practically in unstable environments.\n• Have practical strategies for conducting research interviews in a sensitive\, ethical\, and trauma-informed manner.\n• Have explored their own position as researchers and individuals within a broader social context and the expectations and\npreconceptions they bring to the interaction.\n• Considered the importance of safeguarding their own mental wellbeing in the research context and practical ways of doing so \n  \nPlease note: you will need to sign up to each day individually through Eventbrite\, each day will be different to the last so sign up to all of them for the full course!

DESCRIPTION:This participative workshop run by How2Glu will help you to identify and develop key consultancy skills\, practical approaches to developing client relationships\, and workshop common issues. \nFirst\, we will look at drivers and prospective client / partner expectations and the characteristics of successful client consultant / partner-advisor relationships. We will then focus on essential ‘soft’ skills for consultancy – communication\, flexibility and collaboration. You will identify your strengths and areas for growth and explore strategies to develop and utilise these skills. During the session you will use glucard™ tools to help you identify ways of ‘adding value’ and ways to build / translate relationships for ‘upselling’\, repeat business and recommendations. We will look at different consultancy models\, such as salaried\, freelance\, associate\, and internal consultancy and consider how Intellectual Property (IP) relates to consultancy. Sabina will graphically illustrate concepts and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations. We will discuss common issues in consultancy and workshop ways to overcome them. We will use real examples and methods that are accessible\, visual and hands-on and mindful of the present context that will help you develop consultancy skills and opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:PhD Researcher Taylor Butler-Eldridge from the University of Exeter is hosting the second Windermere Science Evening at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness on Wednesday 20th March 2024. Please arrive for welcome drinks from 6:30 pm. The presentations will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. \n\n\nJoin us for an evening of talks from the University of Exeter\, Freshwater Biological Association\, UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology\, South Cumbria Rivers Trust\, and Lancaster University. The evening will feature historical and current research\, monitoring\, and practical initiatives to help understand and improve water quality and ecological health within the Windermere catchment. It will be a chance to learn more about the main pressures that affect water quality\, long-term data\, and our freshwater critters (human and non-human) swimming in this iconic yet fragile ecology. DESCRIPTION:The viva is almost the end of the PhD. A lot of work leads to this point\, but often anxiety can mix with the sense of achievement at completing the thesis. For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will: \n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva; \n• identify key practical steps to take before submission; \n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. Viva Survivor will be delivered live by Dr Nathan Ryder over Zoom. Registration is limited to 25 places.

Sabrina\, a Brazilian sociologist\, political economist and the Head of Research at Alameda Institute\, will be discussing said transition in the context of the ‘polycrisis’ and from a Global South perspective.\n\nThere will be time for questions and we hope to foster an inclusive environment where knowledge is created collectively.
