SUMMARY:Consultancy Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This participative workshop run by How2Glu will help you to identify and develop key consultancy skills\, practical approaches to developing client relationships\, and workshop common issues. \nFirst\, we will look at drivers and prospective client / partner expectations and the characteristics of successful client consultant / partner-advisor relationships. We will then focus on essential ‘soft’ skills for consultancy – communication\, flexibility and collaboration. You will identify your strengths and areas for growth and explore strategies to develop and utilise these skills. During the session you will use glucard™ tools to help you identify ways of ‘adding value’ and ways to build / translate relationships for ‘upselling’\, repeat business and recommendations. We will look at different consultancy models\, such as salaried\, freelance\, associate\, and internal consultancy and consider how Intellectual Property (IP) relates to consultancy. Sabina will graphically illustrate concepts and demonstrate tools by sharing live visualisations. We will discuss common issues in consultancy and workshop ways to overcome them. We will use real examples and methods that are accessible\, visual and hands-on and mindful of the present context that will help you develop consultancy skills and opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:PhD Researcher Taylor Butler-Eldridge from the University of Exeter is hosting the second Windermere Science Evening at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness on Wednesday 20th March 2024. Please arrive for welcome drinks from 6:30 pm. The presentations will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. \n\n\nJoin us for an evening of talks from the University of Exeter\, Freshwater Biological Association\, UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology\, South Cumbria Rivers Trust\, and Lancaster University. The evening will feature historical and current research\, monitoring\, and practical initiatives to help understand and improve water quality and ecological health within the Windermere catchment. It will be a chance to learn more about the main pressures that affect water quality\, long-term data\, and our freshwater critters (human and non-human) swimming in this iconic yet fragile ecology. DESCRIPTION:The viva is almost the end of the PhD. A lot of work leads to this point\, but often anxiety can mix with the sense of achievement at completing the thesis. For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will: \n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva; \n• identify key practical steps to take before submission; \n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. Viva Survivor will be delivered live by Dr Nathan Ryder over Zoom. Registration is limited to 25 places.

Sabrina\, a Brazilian sociologist\, political economist and the Head of Research at Alameda Institute\, will be discussing said transition in the context of the ‘polycrisis’ and from a Global South perspective.\n\nThere will be time for questions and we hope to foster an inclusive environment where knowledge is created collectively. DESCRIPTION:The viva is almost the end of the PhD. A lot of work leads to this point\, but often anxiety can mix with the sense of achievement at completing the thesis. For many candidates the time before the viva is filled with uncertainty about the day\, uncertainty about how to prepare well – and stress for what the viva might be like. \nViva Survivor is for postgraduate researchers who want to know how to be ready for their viva. In this three-hour live webinar\, you will: \n• learn realistic expectations for the PhD viva; \n• identify key practical steps to take before submission; \n• explore practical strategies for preparation and the day of the viva. \nTime will be spent exploring expectations for both in-person and video vivas\, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A over text chat. DESCRIPTION:UWE Bristol will be running their annual PGR Residential\, ‘Supporting your Research Journey’ which is a two day intensive and highly rewarding event centred around skills development activities for postgraduate researchers. DESCRIPTION:This seminar series explores theoretical\, methodological\, and practical tools for conducting what can be broadly defined as “activist research”. This is a form of research that challenges the traditional separation between theory/action\, academy/society and is committed to producing knowledge grounded in and generative of social and material changes in particular places. There are many ways in which the intersection between these domains is understood and practiced: from “scholar-activism” and “militant research”\, to “community experiments” and “participatory-action-research” and more. Through a reflective and inquisitive approach toward the concepts of research and activism\, this series seeks to unfold the plurality of ways in which we can understand and engage in research-activism.\nAcross a series of four events\, we hope to foster critical discussions and nurture a supportive and inclusive environment where collaborative networks can be forged. We will engage with the work of both established and early career researchers\, as well as representatives from outside of the university\, to consider the diverse ways in which research and activism intersect and the opportunities\, challenges\, possibilities and impossibilities it raises. \nEach Zoom webinar will feature short presentations from three speakers and will have a chance for audience questions and answers. SUMMARY:Broadcast Media Training with Rachel Shabi
DESCRIPTION:Join award- winning journalist Rachel Shabi for a full day online broadcast media workshop. \n\n \n\nRachel has reported extensively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the wider Middle East region\, from the war between Lebanon and Israel in 2006\, the Gaza war of 2008 and the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. She writes for a variety of international publications including the Guardian\, The New York Times\, The London Times\, The Independent\, The Nation and the New York Review of Books. Rachel is a regular commentator across broadcast media\, including BBC News\, Sky News\, CNN and Al Jazeera English. \nA media and communications workshop designed to ensure that\, the next time you address a rolling camera\, an audience or an interview panel\, you’re fully equipped to get your message across. This session covers a range of tips\, techniques and broadcast skills including: engaging your audience and messaging; a quick formula for message prep; taking control of your interview; tackling nervousness; communicating academic research to a wider audience and building confidence and presence. You will have the opportunity to practice some of the techniques in breakouts.
