SUMMARY:NCRM: Introduction to Latent Class Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is a branch of the more General Latent Variable Modelling approach. It is typically used to classify subjects (such as individuals or countries) in groups that represent underlying patterns from the data. In addition to this application LCA provides a flexible framework that can be used in a wide range of contexts: in longitudinal studies (e.g.\, mixture latent growth models\, hidden Markov chains)\, in evaluation of data quality (e.g.\, extreme response style\, cross-cultural equivalence)\, non-parametric multilevel models\, joint modelling for dealing with missing data.\nIn this course you will receive an introduction to the essential topics of LCA such as: what is LCA\, how to run models\, how to choose between alternative models\, how to classify observations\, how to evaluate and predict classifications. You will also apply this knowledge to a number of more advanced models that look at the relationship between latent class variables and at longitudinal data. \nThe course covers: \n\nRefresher of basic concepts in categorical analysis: (marginal) probability\, odds ratios\, logistic regression;\nBasic concepts and assumptions of latent class analysis;\nIntroduction to Latent GOLD software;\nModel fit evaluation: global\, local and substantive evaluation;\nClassification of cases;\nApply these concepts to a number of models looking at: predicting class membership\, relationships between latent classes\, hidden Markov chains\n\nBy the end of the course participants will: \n\nKnow what is Latent Class Analysis;\nBe able to estimate and interpret results from Latent Class Analysis;\nBe able to choose between alternative Latent Class Models;\nUnderstand latent class classification and how to predict it;\nBe able to investigate the relationship between latent class variables.\n\nThe course is aimed at people from all disciplines and types of institutions that want to learn about latent class analysis or\, more generally\, about latent variable modelling. \nPre-requisites \nKnowledge of basic categorical analysis: (marginal) probabilities\, odds ratios\, logistic regression and of linear regression. \nPreparatory Reading \nFor an introduction to Latent Class Analysis: \nCollins\, L. M.\, & Lanza\, S. T. (2010). Latent Class and Latent Transition Analysis: with Applications in the Social\, Behavioral\, and Health Sciences (1 edition). Hoboken\, N.J: Wiley-Blackwell. \nFurther reading \nApplications of Latent Class Analysis: \nHagenaars\, J.\, & McCutcheon\, A. (Eds.). (2009). Applied Latent Class Analysis (1 edition). Cambridge; New York: Cambridge University Press. \nReading on categorical data analysis: \nAgresti\, A. (2007). An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis (2nd Revised edition edition). Hoboken\, NJ: John Wiley & Sons. \n  \nCost\nThe fee per teaching day is: \n• £30 per day for UK/EU registered students\n• £60 per day for staff at UK/EU academic institutions\, UK/EU Research Councils researchers\, UK/EU public sector staff and staff at UK/EU registered charity organisations and recognised UK/EU research institutions.\n• £220 per day for all other participants \nAll fees include event materials\, lunch\, morning and afternoon tea. They do not include travel and accommodation costs.\nA full refund is available 2 weeks prior to the course\, no refund is available after this date. \n  \nHead to the NCRM website for more details.

SUMMARY:Addressing the Reproducibility Crisis: Improving Research Design\, Data Analysis and Reporting
DESCRIPTION:1 Day Event at the University of Bath discussing the best practices as a researcher as more findings fail to replicate. \nThere has been an intense debate regarding the robustness of many published findings in psychological science\, neuroscience and social science over recent years\, with many classic findings failing to replicate\, and a growing realisation that many published findings may be unreliable. Small sample sizes and questionable research practices such as p-hacking\, hypothesising after the results are known\, and selectively publishing positive results have all been identified as contributing factors. \nIn response\, there has been a move towards rigorous and transparent scientific practices\, such as pre-registering study protocols and making materials and data available open-access\, designing studies with sufficient statistical power\, and team science approaches to pooling data\, resources and expertise. \nThis workshop will provide a practical introduction to open science targeted at PhD students. This will include pre-registration of studies and the registered report format adopted by many leading journals\, open data and resources\, and reproducible workflows all of which can be facilitated via open access resources such as the Open Science Framework. It will also include practical exercises\, question and answer sessions and peer learning where current PhD students will talk about their experiences with reproducibility and highlight examples of good practice in their labs. \n\n\n\nAddressing the reproducibility crisis: Improving research design\, data analysis and reporting \nDepartment of Psychology\, 10 West\, University of Bath \nThursday 23rd January 2020 \n  \n09:30 Arrival and coffee \n10:00 Kate Button (University of Bath) – Design matters: why reproducible methods are important \n10:40 Katie Hobbs (University of Bath) – Implementing reproducible methods in my PhD \n11:00 Cathy Pink (University of Bath) – Data management and open data \n11:45 Chris Chambers (Cardiff University) – Registered Reports \n12:30 Lunch \n13:15 Hannah Hobson (University of Greenwich) – Open Science Framework practical (computer lab) \n14:30 Coffee \n15:00 Keynote: Dorothy Bishop (University of Oxford) – Why review should be systematic \n16:00 Closing remarks \n16:15 Close \n\nPlease register for this event using the following link:\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/addressing-the-reproducibility–crisis-improving-research-design-data-analysis-and-reporting-tickets-82805821441

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Knowledge Exchange between PGRs and ECRs in Defence Research
DESCRIPTION:Tickets available here (limited number) \nJoin us to explore ways of navigating the field of Critical Defence Studies as an early career researcher. This one day opportunity is being put together by early career researchers for their peers on the basis of sharing experiences and the ‘things we wish we’d known’. It is a collaboration between the Defence Research Network (DRN) and the Partnership for Conflict\, Crime and Security (PaCCS) through which participants will be supported in working towards publication through a three-staged process involving two follow on PaCCS events. \nWhat is the Defence Research Network? \nThe Defence Research Network (DRN) is for PhD and early career researchers studying defence\, security or the Armed Forces in relation to policy\, strategy\, culture and society. We provide a platform to which PhD and early-career researchers can come together to share work\, ask for recommendations\, create a rapport with one another and support each other in the research process. To find out more check out defenceresearchnetwork.wordpress.com or follow us @DefenceResNet and to join please email defenceresearchnetwork@gmail.com. \nWhat is the Partnership for Conflict\, Crime and Security? \nThere is a pressing and complex challenge to address threats to security and substantial capacity within the research community to support this. The Partnership for Conflict\, Crime and Security Research (PaCCS) is leading the response to this challenge. It is an initiative of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and was established in 2008 as the Global Uncertainties Programme. It aims to deliver high quality and cutting edge research to help improve our understanding of current and future global security challenges. To find out more check out paccsresearch.org.uk.
