Welcome and introductions from SWDTP
Ethel Ng joined the student reps meeting who is currently working with the SWDTP as an EDI Intern for the re-bid process. Ethel expressed a want to discuss issues with the reps and will set up a meeting with the group to form an EDI strategy.
Will be held at UWE on the 9 November. A committee has been set up who will manage the event alongside the Collaboration Facilitator and Mary. Three main themes were identified by the committee which were then sent out across the SWDTP network for people to vote on. The favourite out of the three will then be the overarching conference theme. The next edition of the TOR journal will also be launched at the Annual Conference 2022.
Industry will likely be much more involved through partners in the next re-bid regarding placements. Reps asked whether industry partners in higher education is allowed, and whether mentors/role models may be offered to underrepresented groups.
Mary asked reps about which pages were most and least helpful on the website. Particularly the ‘student forum’ on the website, reps were asked to consider whether this is contributing to the overall purpose of the website. Reps also suggested content on how to meet others in your cohort, how to find a supervisor and postgrad focused societies.
Update from sites/pathways
No major updates from student reps
Regarding equality, diversity and inclusion, reps offered some suggestions to make studentship recruitment more accessible: information sessions outside of working hours, how to write a research proposal, troubleshooting placements for those who are working or have caring responsibilities.
SWDTP had decided on an in person induction on the 7 September but reps raised concerns this may be too early in the academic year, particularly as lots of international students may not be in the UK yet. SWDTP has fed this back and will change the induction date. Reps expressed interest in having socials at individual institutions as well as an SWDTP induction.
