Introduction to Self-Employment & Starting Your Own Business

The workshop will explore how to transition from a PhD to self-employment or starting your own business, the key questions you need to consider, and what your first steps might be. The session is designed for students new to the idea of self-employment, as well as those with prior experience of self-employment who are considering how to update their offer during/following their studies.
During the workshop, you will;
❏ Learn about the practical steps and the latest information you need to know about setting up in business – including tax, insurance, company structures, and day rates
❏ Hear from experienced speakers who have made the transition between academic study and self-employment – sharing top tips, pitfalls to avoid, approaches
❏ Ask questions you have about making the move to self-employment or starting your own business, and get some answers!
This workshop will take place on Zoom and be facilitated by Dr Ceri Gorton and Ellen O’Hara from Bird & Gorton.
