Sharing Courage
Researching Solutions to Today’s Challenges
SWDTP Student Conference 2026
25th November
The University of Plymouth
Every year the SWDTP hosts an Annual Student Conference planned by students for students. It presents a fantastic opportunity to engage in a dynamic and inclusive platform that promotes innovative ideas and critical reflections on the future of social sciences.

We believe this theme covers a range of challenges faced by PhD students and early career researchers, including:
Embracing uncertainty in research
Researching in a rapidly changing and complex world means navigating uncertainty. We want to reflect on how uncertainty shapes our experiences as researchers, influences our motivation, and can become a valuable and normal part of the research process.
Innovating through new ideas and approaches
Novel research requires courage to explore unfamiliar questions, test new methods, and pursue ideas whose outcomes are not yet known.
Creating impact in challenging times
Research has an important role to play in addressing today’s social, environmental, political, and technological challenges. Communicating research, advocating for evidence-informed solutions, and sustaining resilience and purpose as researchers working paves the way for meaningful change.
