Age UK Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) is a leading, independent, local charity working with a wide and diverse population of older people—likely one of the most extensive non-statutory reach organisations outside the Council and NHS. Through multiple services and contracts, we collect a significant volume of data to meet reporting requirements, but this is largely service-specific and time-bound, limiting cross-cutting analysis and insight.
This placement offers PhD researchers the opportunity to support the development of a more strategic, future-facing approach to data, learning, and impact within a resource-constrained third sector context. A key challenge—and area of interest—is how to design approaches that are pragmatic, light-touch, and proportionate, while still generating meaningful, credible insight that can inform service development and influence wider sector thinking.
Depending on the researcher’s interests and expertise, activities may include reviewing current data practices; identifying gaps in what is collected; exploring approaches used elsewhere; and contributing to the design of a scalable, usable impact framework. Opportunities will also include developing approaches to analysis and reporting, and considering how systems can support collaboration across partner organisations. A tailored work plan will be agreed collaboratively, with mentoring provided throughout.
