The Winchester Gallery at Winchester School of Art – Public Engagement Programme for developing speculative and collaborative tools

What critical ground exists between speculative fiction (sf) and Gallery, Library, Archive and Museum (GLAM) spaces and collections? Through small acts of making, ‘The Speculative Space of Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM)’ research project develops speculative and collaborative tools to imagine and co-construct the future of GLAM work and research. As part of a 2027 exhibition of this research at The Winchester Gallery (April-June 2027), a Public Engagement programme will also involve local community groups in a network of 14 major GLAM institutions across the UK, supporting arts and cultural access that is vital to the future economic success of these communities. The ‘Future-Making’ collaborative research and career development opportunity will enable a PGR to contribute to this research in the form of practice-based research collaborations, an academic publication, and a workbook for GLAM audiences.
This placement would offer a student interested in (for example) GLAM work, in curation and museum studies, or in speculative fiction, design, practice, or activism the opportunity to deepen and develop their expertise in these areas. The exact nature of the student’s contribution would depend on the area of their expertise, but the successful PGR applicant will also have the opportunity to coordinate and lead one of our Public Engagement workshops together with a GLAM partner, as well as contribute to the public exhibition itself and work alongside our colleagues at The Winchester Gallery.
Deadline to register interest: 10 January 2027
