My research explores how intersecting identities shape UK citizens’ perceptions of issue ownership
and salience, and how these perceptions influence party choice and propensity to vote. This
addresses a gap in existing research, which typically examines identities such as age, gender, and
ethnicity separately and overlooks how they interact. Using an issue ownership-salience framework,
I investigate how intersecting identities shape issue priorities, perceptions of party competence, and
electoral engagement. I do this by adopting a mixed-methods approach, combining secondary data,
interviews and focus groups, and surveys to develop and validate improved intersectionally-
informed measures for understanding contemporary UK voting behaviour.
